What does a Co-Packer do?

A co-packer (short for contract packer) is a third-party manufacturer that produces, packages, and sometimes helps formulate your food or beverage product. Instead of building your own production facility, you can partner with a co-packer to scale efficiently — letting you focus on sales, marketing, and growth.

Co-packers typically provide equipment, labor, and certifications you might not have in-house. Some offer full turnkey solutions (sourcing ingredients and packaging), while others require you to bring your own materials. The right co-packer can help you produce at volume, maintain consistency, and meet regulatory requirements as you grow.

Am I ready for a Co-Packer?

You’re likely ready for a co-packer if you’ve outgrown your current production setup and have steady demand — or clear visibility into future orders. Co-packers work best with brands that have dialed-in recipes, consistent ingredient sourcing, and packaging specs that can scale.

Before approaching one, make sure your product is finalized (not still in development), your margins can support outsourced production, and you understand your minimum order needs. Having clear documentation, forecasting, and food safety plans will also set you up for a smoother partnership.
